One of my pedals (535 from '98 ) started making clicking sounds, and has developed play on it's axle. I think the bearings got grinded. So, before buying new ones, is there a way to disassemble the thing and put new bearings in? Of course if such bearings can be found in shops, and if it can be done with "normal" tools... Thanks!

With some Shimano SPDs you can buy replacement axles but remember to turn the axle the right way, if the plastic collars snaps in the pedal its a question of gas mark 4 for 30 mins  Other than that you can buy loose bearings to replace the KO'd ones in your pedal. I replaced the bearings in my DX SPDs some years ago and was initially concerned about not doing the locknut up enough as it is difficult to tighten properly, usual Shimano trait, after 4 years and no probs I guess I've done it right.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
