Shimano conspiracy theory #1

So here it is. The new electronic shifting that has been getting lots of press lately is
not going to be what you think. It wil be wireless right from the start. Why would Shimano
waste all that development money on wired shifting if(as an article on this website stated) there would probably be a wireles model a couple of years later. Doesn't make sense to develop one thing and then discard it after a few years. And while we're at
it, why would they develope 2 almost completely different systems at pretty much the same time. No, I think the wired version is just a smoke screen. What you see in the pictures is a cleverly disguised wireless shifting system and the cables are there just
for looks. I think Shimano is doing this to get everyone thinking about electronic shifting
and when it finally comes out(wireless) it will be like dropping a bomb on the competition.
So there you have it. What more proof do you need???

Ummm, how about some pictures and some top secret Strap 2 documents from Shimano that some low-level minion inadvertently left on the train :?: :!:

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

    And theory #2 ?

Theory #2 is that I'm full of sh*t. This one is the one most likely to be true.

"why would they develope 2 almost completely different systems at pretty much the same time"

Seems obvious. COST of developing two will not be twice that of developing one. And the fashion-fools who buy the wired (how apt!) will then have to buy the wireless 2 years down the road (sic). Double the sales for less than double the cost! Just the "keep the punter salivating" syndrome....

Just realised a nice acronym there "Punter Is Salivating Syndrome". AKA taking the P....

If you're not working in sales or marketing you should be.

Dennis, now, shall I take that as a compliment....no, perhaps not! And I'm not (working in...). But I have seen more "business plans" than I care to recall.

The disadvantage with wireless shifting (apart from the interference potential) is that you either have batteries located in every component OR a single battery but cabled to the various components. The former is a PITA to keep charged, the latter? - you might as well cable the signals too.

I think I see your point. Being called a "salesman" is, at least here in the states, almost
as big a put down as being callled a "lawyer".

That's what I was thinking. Unless they've developed really tiny batteries, then there aren't any in the shift levers and mechs. If they have, I can only see them lasting for around 10 minutes on a good day...

There are enough threads about problems with wireless computers letalone wireless shifting but I very much doubt that will stop the release of wireless shifting a couple of years after wired.
I'd rather walk than use Shimano

I can see the boys in Vincenza working on a 2.4GHz transmitter device right now - give it enough power and enough spectrum and the potential chaos would be fun to watch!
