Fork lock-out and front disc issues on new GT Avalanche 1.0

Hi
I got my new GT Avalanche 1.0 last week and have a couple of questions.
The bike had some front and rear disc rub issues, but I've sorted them myself. However, the front brake wasn't, and still isn't, nearly as powerful as I expected. I've never had a bike with discs before and thought they were much more powerful than Vs, but I can't lock the front brake and couldn't put myself over the bars (if I wanted to). I understand that discs offer better modulation than V's, but I still expected to be able to brake very hard with the front wheel by pulling hard on the lever. Might the brake need bleeding?
Also when locked-out, the Suntour X-100 fork still has about 1cm of travel. This makes it quite clunky. Is that normal for a cheap fork?
The bike has a free service available, so I should be able to get brake (and fork if it's not working properly) sorted, but would like to know if the behaviour is normal.
Many thanks in advance for any replies.

Bakes will need to bed in before you get the full power out of them.
The forks even with lockout on will move a little like you say. Again the forks will bed in making the travel smoother.0 -
The 10mm or so of travel when locked out is actually normally a trait of more expensive forks - they rarely lock out completely."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

Right, thanks for that. If the front brake hasn't improved in a few weeks, I'll take it for the first free service and mention it then.
The idea of a tiny bit of fork travel seems pointless. On the X-100s it clanks and makes it feel like the headset is knackered. They are very nice when not-locked though!0 -

Hi all,
I bought a GT Avalanche 2.0 2008 last week and I also have a disc rub problem on the rear. I took it back yesterday for the shop to make adjustments and it no longer rubs when I free wheel with no weight. But soon as I am back on the bike the rubbing starts again.
Any ideas? something I can do myself or back to the shop?
Thanks in advance

Discs often take a while to bed in, and the rub eventually dissapears.
RE lockout - the limited movement is to aid traction.0
