Gear selection with single pivots (and most other designs!) makes a big difference. Drop into the granny on a single pivot like an Orange, and bob is much more likely and so pro pedal designs can help. Rider movement and weight shifts also causes bob, so different riding styles has an effect bike to bike.

Bob is suspension movement when pedalling - pedal kickback is the chain pulling the cranks back as the suspension moves. Reducing one often results in increasing the other! As yet there is no holy grail to suspension design, just a trade off of ideals. Single pivots often have the pivot located in line with the middle chainring chain line. This tries to prevent the force from pedaling along the line of the chain from pulling the axle up or down and thus preventing bob from this mode.

So as ever in these matters, it is personal preference!
