Contador wins the Giro

Nadal thrashes Federer in Paris (likey to win Wimbledon as well)

Spain beat Russia 3-0 in European Championships and are one of the favorites to win

Does the Spectre of Puerto still haunt European Sport?

The rumours about athletes from other sports being clients of Dr Fuentes have, as far as I know, been nothing more than that, i.e. no-one has seen actual evidence that proves Nadal or any Spanish football players have used his services.

On the other hand there is concrete evidence that a number of cycling teams and riders were using him. Cycling clearly has an institutionalised drug problem and needs to get it's house in order if it is to remain as a credible sport in the eyes of sponsors.

Personally I'd be astonished if other sports didn't have a drugs problem but I think it's difficult for any follower of cycling to try and take the moral high ground on this issue.

I thought it was established that a number of Spanish footie teams had used Fuentes, but noit for owt illegal (clearly, for his gyneacalogical services...)

I don't think cycling fans are interested in taking the moral high groud - I for one would simply like to see doping taken just as seriously by fans and administrators of all other sports as it is for cycling.

But do other sports have a problem as serious as cycling? In the eyes of the public I'd say that only athletics has as dirty a reputation.

I've heard rumours but I, personally, haven't seen any evidence. I know I could be wrong on this, hence the caveat in the original posting.

Wasn't Barcelona FC mentioned? I am off there in a couple of weeks. I will ask.

Mentioned but they used their billions of Euro's to sue a newspaper. And the good Dr himself hinted he was offered a pair of concrete boots if he opened his mouth.

I just feel that Puerto is a huge novel and that we have only had a few chapters. We can't even get the complete cycling picture so who knows about the rest...

NFL and baseball have a serious problem, perhaps even worse than cycling in the case of the NFL. I don't see why other big money sports shouldn't either, in their own ways.

A lot of professional footballers behave like cnuts, and need treating as such. (Or is that just the premiership?)

Nope. Sadly that standard of behaviour goes all the way down the footballing pyramid.

The game is rapidly becoming dead to me.

As far as I knew of the 200 names that the press had as a figure, only around 50 were cyclists.

    The rest were....

    From Cycling News:

Ex-Kelme professional Jesus Manzano, the first rider to break the code of silence about a Spanish doping ring two years ago, told reporters on France 3 he saw well-known footballers (soccer players) from Spain's first division clubs visit the offices of doctor Eufemiano Fuentes', the man at the centre of the Operaciòn Puerto investigation.

"I saw well-known footballers, but I cannot say how many," said Manzano last Thursday evening on France 3, adding: "this doctor [Fuentes] takes care [of athletes] from all over the world. Manzano also affirmed deceased Italian cycling star Marco Pantani was one of Fuentes' clients.
