I am thinking of buying an entry level bike and am down to choosing between the TREK 4500 and the Carrera vulcan any views out there on these two bikes?

The 4500 has a decent frame on it and is well upgradable. I don't know alot about the Carrera, but my girlfriend had a 4500 and was pleased. Its was a bit heavy but i think this was largely due to the fork. Have you considered Kona and Specialized's offerings at the price point?- Kona Hot '96 - Marin Rift Zone '09 - Cannondale Synapse Carbon '06 - Kona Caldera '98 - Kona AA '94 - Dawes Kickback II - Cannondale BadBoy '11 - Genesis iOiD SS -0

The Trek is 100 quid or som more than the Vulcan - did you mean Kraken? Both great bikes.0

go fot the vulcan mate it's light and well thought out and the frame feels more solid than the fury-as not weight obsesed- (got both) but if you can affors the xtra 100 quid or so go for the new (black) kraken as as hydraulic diskbrakes and double butted frame

The Trek is definitely the better bike of thise two, although as mentioned, they are not the same price."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

Go for the kraken ,08 model is brilliant vfm . Not to many bikes come with this spec including remote lockout on fork at this price point . Got myself an 07 model in sales but wish i had held on now and spent the extra cash.0

you've really gotta ask yourself if you are ever going to use remote lock out though?
I have looked up the spec for the carrera kraken and it says it has hydrp discs, but it doesn't say which ones! is this a harmless omission or are they rubbish ones?- Kona Hot '96 - Marin Rift Zone '09 - Cannondale Synapse Carbon '06 - Kona Caldera '98 - Kona AA '94 - Dawes Kickback II - Cannondale BadBoy '11 - Genesis iOiD SS -0 -

I'm pretty sure they're Tektro Auriga Comps which are decent brakes."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0 -
i have standard (top of fork leg) lock out and use it regularly when transferring from smoothish to rough, but i find it simple enough to just rech down and do it. dont think id want to pay extra for remote lock.0

It is Halfords USELESS website! As much as I admire the bikes, and the prices, SORT THAT BLOODY WEBSITE OUT (if you are reading Mr Halfords). You are the ONLY people to stock Carrera (it is your brand). You obviously want people to buy online. So list the full spec! Take 5 mins and change the site. Every other manufacturer in the world lists the specs of their bikes, why not you???0 -

It would be nice to have the frame geometries too!"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0
