is it normal for the chain not to shift to some gears (cogs) from certain gears?
i find that if the chain is on largest gear at the rear and the middle one at the front, the chain won't shift up to the largest chainring at the front.
and i can't shift to the smallest chainring at the front, when rear is on the smallest gear.
the chain seems to rub a little too when on the largest chain ring at the front.
i've been through loads of guides, had all the cables undone and started from the beginning, but prehaps this is normal

not normal. Just poor set up. (presuming that all, the parts are compatible).
read the info on parktools"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
