ride2work scheme coming in at work has given me the opportunity of getting a new hardtail to suppliment my marin rocksprings :D

Looking at giant xtc c1 07 or scott scale 35 08 - one carbon other alloy, both xt running kit. Priced within £100 of each other with a max budget of £1500.

Will be riding mainly road during week but hitting the trails (south / north downs) at weekends along with the odd enduro.

Any views on these would help me make a choice.

For that outlay a test is a must - or at least sitting on them!

Why aren't you considering the Scale 30?

Test rides are planned in very near future, just need to locate an lbs who stock giants - east sussex area if any knows of any.

had sort of discounted the scale 30 as it drops to lx running set and with just a 1.5lbs weight difference I think I'd rather take the xt set and get 2lb of my gut!

Having tried the 30 and 35 before I bought my 30 i'd say please give the 30 a try first.

It's not just the 1.5lb of weight, it's the fact that your getting one of the lightest HT frames on the market.

Regarding the 'low' spec on the 30, parts wear out and can therefore be upgraded. Either way, XT rear with LX front and shifters ain't to be sniffed at.

I was speaking to Nick Craig at last weekend's marathon championships and he said £ for lb the 30 is the best xc bike scott do when you consider the frame is £1300rrp and the forks are around £500 (for non oe equivilant F100RLC's)

Just my 2 pence having been in your shoes just this last week

thanks for your comments Steve, you've got me thinking again and having just searched the web I've found a 30 for £1350, so there's now 2 carbon bikes in the running.

I get your point on upgrading the spec, something I'd do overtime on a bike anyway I think.

So 30 has edged in front at moment, now sorting test rides

    Thanks

Glad to be of some help and glad you're testing them first, so many people just buy a bike without riding it and then end up regretting their decision.

I can't give any idea's regarding the XTC as I didnt test one, for whatever reason the Scale just felt 'right' after a 4 hour test ride. I must admit though I did doubt whether i'd actually get one, the stretched out racer look put me off. However having tested it I was suprised how much of a normal MTB it felt. It's first outing was at Margam Park on a particularly gruelling course, a week on and i'm already chucking it about the trail like it was my old kona. I've no doubt the XTC is similar in feel too.

Either way, with a carbon frame you'll have the perfect base to build a seriously light bike if you so wish to. In standard trim they are more than capable.

Don't know the Scott but I can vouch for the Giant - the frame quaility is impressive.

Welcome to the fold mate, so glad you considered it, you wont regret it!

And don't worry about carbon being 'weak' you'll soon be throwing it about like it was an ally bike!

Mike.... Congrats. Glad you like your choice.

To be honest you couldn't go wrong with either bikes, they are both top notch... having got a scott myself though..... I'd plump for another scale everytime.. in most head to head brand face offs.
