Removing cranks

i have a tool to remove the cranks bt it wont fit as there is a threded rod protruding from the centre of the now exposed crank thread
any advice?

    What are the cranks?
    Make. model and year?

    they are old, 10 yrs or so

    on a mountain bike that i am changing to single speed (or trying)

    though i would ask here as you guys are usually pretty helpful

    and they are shimano

    There are a few BB types that use a nut on the end of the BB spindle, rather than a bolt. Depends on the model of crank puller you have - some you can unscrew enough to allow the threaded spindle to fit on the inside.
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
