Specialized Stumpjumper FSR 2008 Front Mech Issues

Hi,
I picked up a 2008 specialized stumpjumper FSR Comp a week ago. The bike is really great apart from issues with the front mech. It can change between middle and large without any problems but struggles to get into granny.
It has been like this from ride one. Sometimes it will drop down with little problems, sometimes it will take a couple of peddle turns but most times it will not drop for love nor money. It seems to be worse when the bike is dirty or when the peddles are under load, which is understandable but there is still a big problem when gently peddling around a car park.
When in granny the front mech seems to be as close to the frame as it can be. The cable is slack and the screw is fully out. The bike shop have now seen that it isn't dropping properly and will be phoning specialized to see if they have any ideas.
The local bike shop have said that the front mech looks like a cut down standard mech that is mounted directly onto the frame which doesn't give a lot of latitude for configuration.
Any ideas?

That's what the boys in the shop are thinking, but it looks OK to them, it's a bit of a strange one this.
If the mech is OK could it be down to the frame?0 -
try to clean up the mech, and the cables
also check the cranks if the chainring or chain got any problems
when put back the cranks together make sure the screw is proper done and the stop screw is not over done(or make it a bit loose for the lower),if its not anything to do with the set up then send them back to specialized
hope it helps08 Swork Stumpy FSR with 3 brains

its under warrenty so I'd just have it switched. It dosn't matter that it looks fine, it dosn't work.My Ride Stumpjumper Expert 20080

I have the same problem on my 04 Stumpy. It's as though an extra spacer in the bottom bracket is required, to move the chainrings out 2.5mm, although I've never actually tried this....0

sounds like it could be a common problem. Has anyone else seen this?0

this was sorted. It was a problem with a shim in the front mech that ment it was too high. They took the mech off, lowered it and put it back on and it worked like a dream.0

I ride the 08 Stumpy Expert FSR and luckily had no such problem - however I have now bent to hell the rather anonymous Deore LX front mech - so a good time to fit a nice shiny new M770 XT jobbie.
Question is - is the existing one an E-Type fit or not? Looks like it is bolted right onto some kind of hanger on the frame itself coming up off the rear pivoted chainstays rather than coming up off the BB.....will a standard one fit?
Thanks

it is a E type that has had bits taken off it, the bit that goes around the bottom bracket.
I thnk that e type should work.0 -
I've had the same problem with my Stumpy FSR Elite. I'll check it for a shim when I get home.0
