Women's specific bike size etc..
Hi there, I need help sizing my old road bike in order to buy a new one! I ride a swinnertons frame that was built for me 10 years ago with second hand Shimano RSX 7 speed. It is now, 8000 miles later, knackered! I am 5'5" tall and inside leg 31". I am having problems knowing which measurement of the frame I should go with. I have taken several measurements-from centre of the bottom bracket to seat post is 50cm. Centre BB to centre of top tube (underside of top tube) is 46cm and to top edge of top tube is 50cm.
My dilemma is-do I buy a 46/47cm or 50cm?
My other problem is which bike! I live on the west coast of scotland many miles from any bike shops so would be buying online without trying the bike first. I have also been off the bike for the past 4 years having had 2 children and don't know what is around on the bike market now. I am keen to get back into riding proper and possibly back to racing (eventually!) so don't really want an entry level bike. Funds are tight so price around £500 would be about right. I ride a Trek 6700 mtb which i really like so I was thinking of a Trek if I could get one. The only other option would be to buy a totally new groupset and wheels for the old bike which i'm not that keen to do, feels like throwing good money away............
Can anyone help? I really am stuck. I have spoken to Giant UK about their sizing and they say for my size I should be on a 46.5cm. I don't see how it can be that exact though! Any views on bikes or sizes would be great help, also where to buy from!! Thanks for listening to my first post!!

There are only two measurements you need to be concerned with on the frame, the length of the top tube C to C and the length of the head tube. This will allow you to compare your current frame with both sloping and traditional designs.
Be aware that if your current frame has an external heaset you'll need to take this into account when measuring against an integrated design. An external will add roughly 30mm to the height of the front of the bike.
After 8k I doubt your current frame is anywhere near being knackered. If the components are worn out treat it to some new 10 speed stuff and maybe a respray if the paint is worn.
Hope this makes sense, it's my birthday today and I've had a small bit to drink.0 -
Thanks for the info. If I were to go for the new groupset, do you know which one would be a reasonable one preice and quality wise? I don't know whether i could get an ultegra for the money?
Thanks, Lou.0 -
Hi Loupot,
I am 5'4 and have 30" inside leg and ride a giant TCR CW size small - which is the 46.5cm frame. It fits me brilliantly, I love it. It has a 90mm stem so if you were to get a 46.5cm giant and wanted a bit more reach you could easily swap the stem. There are loads of giants to choose from with a range of prices. If you spend a bit of time searching on the net you might be able to pick yourself a bargain - that's what I did otherwise there is no way I would have got the TCR!
