Ryedale Rumble

Any one else doing this one?

I foolishly entered this one (Rumble 1) in February hoping that I would have enough miles under my legs by the end of July to be able to do this. I did a few 100 mile sportives last year with around 6000-6500 feet of climbing and always got respectable times, but ths one is 11500feet of climbing :!: Due to work/famiy commitments, I'm only managing to do 120 miles a week which usually includes a 50-70 mile run with about 4000ft of climbing on a Sunday. and I got a very good time of 4hrs 6 minutes in the Spires and Squires sportive in Northamptonshire last month (80miles and 4500 ft of climbing). My next sportive is the Wyre Forest Stinger that has about 7500ft of climbing 3 weeks before the Ryedale Rumble.

Is the long route do-able with someone with my training load or should I change to the Rumble 2 route?

I run a compact chainset and will use a 11-28 cassette for the Rumble

As far as I can tell you'll be fine for the full route cyclingvet! You're doing more than me and I've going for a gold in the Marmotte in 4 weeks' time (114 miles, 5000m climbing).

I've signed up for the RR but whether I do it or not is another story. There don't seem to be many cheap places to stay in the area - or even anywhere near the area - and I don't fancy a 5am start just to reach the start. Or do I?
You just have to ride like you never have to breathe again.

What about camping? I'm taking the family up camping nr Helmsley that weekend. The site is only 2 miles from the start. Arrive Friday;leave Monday am. Plenty of campsites in and around the area. Lots to do:'Forbidden Corner' in Middleton is a fantastic place if you've got kids.

That's encouraging words vermooten :) . My good time on the Spires and Squires was mainly due to being in a good group all the way. With some of these very steep climbs on the RR there's going to be a much greater chance of getting dropped and having to do most of the course alone , with a consequent sap on energy reserves :( .

This will be my first taste of anything this hard (is it one of the most difficult sportives in the UK?) and part of me is really looking forward to the challenge and part of me is dreading it!

I'm used to 5am starts and if the weather is good I'll be up there! It's also on my 49th birthday and if I complete it with reasonable time it will be a nice present to myself.

There's a lot more accomodation than you think - whereabouts are you looking at stopping?

    Hi Folks

You really shouldn't have a problem with finding good digs in the area. Nearby Helmsley is a tourist hotspot and the hotels can be a bit pricey but there are some great guest houses and caravan / camping sites throughout Ryedale, that are reasonably priced. If you contact the Tourist Information Centre they will find you somewhere. We work with them every year on the Ryedale Grand Prix Premier Calendar Race that this year is the National Road Race. If you mention to them that it's for British Cycling's Ryedale Rumble Event they will match you up to the sort of accommodation that is good for bikies. such as early beakfasts, safe bike storage and so on. The contact is maltontic@btconnect.com

Hi guys, ive never riden the Rumble but ive entered it, im sure that with exception of the fred Whitton that the Rumle will prove to be possibly the hardest. I rode the White rose yesterday which is nastey but had no problem with it but the climbs on the Rydale are completely different , a few of them are quite servere e.g. Rosedale Chimney after 100m is a viscious 1:3 and theres 25m to the finish, time to dig the 27sprocket out!

Before then you've got the lesser known Boltby Bank which is the best part of .75 mile and it's 25% average, straight up with no hairpins or respite. Thats after about 20 miles and it's horrific, no 2 ways about it.

The after the gorgeous but tough Bransdale loop, you head upto Church Houses and Blakey Bank, another 25% slog that also goes straight up.

I don't think they had that much spare tarmac around here when they built the roads.

It's a tough ride, but not impossible by any means.

Did the White Rose yesterday...you can see what I thought in the topic about that event.

Me / Ash68 / Shockedsoshocked / John.C did the Ryedale Rumble Reccy in April for Bob.H and Matt Payne...as Monty says the RR is a real tester...the climbs of Boltby Bank / Blakey Bank and the Chimey will bring a tear to the eye...I would simply urge fellow sportifers out there to do this one...its so special...the NY Moors offer some of the best scenery / quiet roads and steepest roads in the country...and this sportif gives an all round explaration in the whole region...in the hands of super organised BC this sportif will be legend.

Read my account...and since I'm a scotsman its an honest appraisal of the route without any 'home area' viewpoints:-

I found that out a while ago, but it just doesn't sound the same.

A word of warning for entrants as well - the Roman Road from Egton Bridge to Pickering, around the 60-70 mile mark, is in disgraceful condition, with huge potholes everywhere.

I rode it 2 weeks ago and in a group that could be perilous if you don't get out of the way quickly.

    Take care.

Hey Rich just read your article on the Rydale, wot can i say , very accurate especially the section on my beloved Chimney, been up 3xs this year isnt it strange how you can love something that causes so much pain. Ive never been up it with 100m in the bag though, this could be my first defeat on the Chimney.......

Want to see some real photo's of what awaits on the outstanding Sportif?...and also a real nice 'down to earth' and honest appraisal...then have a wee look at the article up on the homepage of the Cyclosport.Org site...Ready to Rumble?......you better be

    http://www.cyclosport.org/default.aspx

Its on the homepage but its also in my Blog...

P.s Usually photo's don't cut it showing gradients, but have a look at some of those...they look steep and they still don't show the gradient...Rosedale Chimney...mental!

I've entered and paid, but am doing a Paris-London ride the same weekend so can't make it. If anyone wants a free entry (they just have to sign on in my name), please email me. I'm signed on for the shorter route...

    Cheers,

Richy the recce ride was really tough, but only 80 miles or so long. I Can only imagine how hard Rosedale Chimney is going to be like after 100 miles. One thing is for sure it's going to bloody hurt!! I can see total carnage on that climb. I cramped up on the climb of Hardknott during the FWC, just hope the same doesn't happen on the chimney. The WRC is an amazing sportive, the scenery in that part of the country is worth the pain alone and when you factor how well organised the event was and how well stocked the feed stations were to know the same people organise the Rumble, wel you just know it's going to be a great day out at the end of July.
John C think your comments about Boltby Bank are well justified my friend. It's a tough climb and anyone who doesn't show it the respect it deserves on the day will be in big trouble. The same can be said for Blakey bank as well mind. It took every ounce of effort and determination for me to reach the top without putting a foot down. Mind you it was my own fault as I had foolishly tried to keep pace with Shocked so Shocked , the best climber in the group and the only rider amoungst us who manages to look like a pro. While we were slogging our guts out he could ride away from us with apparent effortless ease..
Roll on the 27 july and let the suffering begin .....
  • I'm looking forward to this event massively. I know the route and the terrain and (if I get my arse in gear) will have some serious training under my belt. Hopefully the weather will be as good as it was for the WRC.
