Can't yank the cranks off

I'm trying to diagnose the source of the creaking noise coming from the cranks of my partner's one year old Ribble bike. It has a 105 groupset and I thought I would remove the cranks to check whether they were fitted "dry" but I've found that my crank extractor won't fit the left hand crank and there's nowhere at all to use an extractor on the drive side crank. I've removed the plastic cover on the left one but the crank extractor has a different thread size. If I ever get the cranks off, how do I get them back on again without an allen bolt?

No extractor needed. Just slacken the 2 allen bolts, Turn the tag washer in the crack on the crank so it clears the BB spindle. Pull the crank off. The other side just pushes out.
Go to the Shimano site tech section or Park Tools for how to do this and more important how to put it all back.0 -
Thanks John, it all becomes clear in the end! :idea:0

I'll second that. Pay attention to the proper sequence of putting it back together or you
could screw it good. Just be sure you know what you are doing.

You'll need a special tool to adjust the end-load on the bearings via the plastic cap on the end of the spindle before tightening the pinch bolts on the non-drive crank - your LBS should be able to help as it's a cheapy plastic job. You can use a pair of internal cir-clip pliers as a substitute.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
