Weird logic

I bought an 07 Specialized Allez Elite a couple of months ago.
A mate is impressed with the bike and fancies getting one. He has this thing that Specialized bikes should be red & black, but this is not a problem as the 08 Allez Elite is this colour.
Then he looks at the spec. Yep Specialized have improved the frame by adding Carbon seat stays and amazingly they have also lowered the price by over £120.
However, gone is the 105 groupset, replaced by Tiagra and there are other lower spec parts fitted too.
I know bikes are built to a price, but I fail to see the logic in lowering the price & spec. Needless to say, my mate is looking at other options now.

I got a Scott CR1 Team 07 recently after looking at the 08 model, realizing it was missing numerous carbon parts (stem, seat post) didn't look as good and was considerably more expensive.
I don't get it either, but atleast I got a bargain out of it."A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"
