Why do the British still love yahs?

Tory party MPs, people on the Apprentice & Big Brother, pop stars, etc seem to be elevated because they are yahs. To a foreigner living in Britain, the class divide and inequality of opportunity are the nation's biggest problems, strangling the economy and causing anti sociall behavour, etc. These people born into privilege should have no favours, and not be fawned over. No wonder social mobility in Britain has completely stalled. Posh schools claiming charitable status, etc etc. Get rid of it all I say. That doesn't make me a socialist. I just believe in meritocracy and a level playing field.

Maybe we like them because they are not loud, opinionated and hang out in huge drunken groups between stints of bar work?

Seriously most Toffs seem to be more pleasant than the bulk of British society. They might be stiffing us but they do it in a polite way

sounds like someone who expects everything to be given them on a plate for free.

If you can't have it then no one else should be entitled to have it. is that right ?

It must be difficult for people born in countries with no History or culture to understand a country like Britain which has a 4000 year history and has been the most powerful and innovative nation on the planet.
Britain's power stems from our immense pride in our countries historical and current achievements. This national pride is being erroded by foreigners who come here to live and take advantage of our freedom of speech, free NHS and social care system, free education system and every thing else then find fault with us or bomb us

Alain is a right wing AND a bigot. What an enticing combination!

I assume "yah" is because a certain section of posh society (most famously the original 80s upper-class yuppies) say "yah" instead of "yes".

  • I have no interest in social standing, but have never been threatened or abused by a snob/yah/ whatever. As long as they leave me be, i don't care where they are from or what they do.
I think that some of the replies on here are extremely offensive. The Australians I have met in Europe have been for the most part a bright adventurous group who have added to the country and are most welcome (aside from a certain smug sporting supremacy). I do find it wrong that groups of people make little effort to integrate, and seem to prefer a siege mentality, gladly taking the bits of europe which benefit them whilst rejecting the rest. Australians always seem to make an effort to mix. I pay a lot of tax and am happy for them to benefit. I would hope that they would reciprocate.

    Fixed your post.

(but, you're right, I may be jealous of the Australians but they're mostly decent people - and when you have a superiority complex like they do you just ignore the natives, rather than hate and/or envy them!)

Got to take exception to this - the vast majority of the "foreigners" that I encounter on a daily basis are decent hard working folk actively contributing to society. The parasites living off benefits they don't deserve are usually of British descent.

Its much more interesting that the OP seems to think that contestants in The Apprentice are in some way upper class. I watched the last part of the series last night and was amazed that nobody mentioned the fact that all the applicants seem to be galloping psychopaths.

I've read all this and still don't really know what a Yah is. I'm past caring now so please don't explain, I'm off.
