The Ark Royal is in Liverpool for a few days and was open to the public today . Got up earlyish and took kids - thousands there. Really interesting to see her and kids and I were looking forward to going on the flight deck but guess what? Health and Safety had been and said the steps up to the deck were a hazard so no-one allowed up - bloody nanny state - they probably told the captain not to go out to sea in case a big wave came and got them all wet.

sounds like a good excuse not to let people up near loud and dangerous things to me too

did they walk past the comms room and then say don't look in there you re not allowed cos its all classified - they always used to do that to me (I live in plymouth so these things are common) - like waving a red rag to a bull
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

To be fair the navy guys were really apologetic - just seems that H&S have gone a bit daft. Doobz - hope you get a few miles in.

I went on and was told that we weren't allowed on the flight deck etc because of all the thousands of people who'd turned up.
"We can't have all these people crawling all over the ship"
Very interesting all the same, though having queued for the best part of three hours I felt a little bit cheated.

Leuanllan - perhaps the stories don't tally!! The guy I sspoke to said that the crowd today was similar to what they get everywhere - still - kids enjoyed the ship and I'm off to do the white rose classic in the morning so bollocks to the lot of them - hopefully the H&S people will slip on the banana skins at the start!!!

I hate Health and Safety, the mere words put my nerves on edge.
I guess you'd get variations on the story depending on who you spoke to.
I went out for a ride today as well, a gorgeous scenic cruise through the Goyt Valley near Buxton, peace, quiet, and nobody banging on about damn H&S!

we can do away with traffic regs as well imagine the fun the clarkson types would have!

Our parents, and their parents, and their parents etc managed without the H&S BS you get everywhere these days. Yeah - keep safe, but no need to wrap kids in bubble wrap (that said, H&S won't let them do anything anyway that would create the need for bubblewrap.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

At the cottage hospital where my Mum works, H&S have just decided that all of the doors at the back of the building need to be locked as they are unmanned and anyone can get in. Only trouble is they're all fire exits FFS.

H&S have banned the wrapping of children in bubble wrap as there is a risk of suffocation and the everpresent risk that a bubble may burst and cause an eye injury....and cotton wool as it's a choking hazard.

Never had a problem with unguarded steps on ships or subs at Navy Days....and I hate heights!!
I'd rather walk than use Shimano

The problem with H&S is not the guidlines or regulations, it is the fact that people are ultra-careful in interpreting them. We have become a very blame-oriented society so no-one will risk even the slightest chance of being sued or prosecuted.

The reason we have so many H&S regs for everything, that is only because people no longer have any common sense and refuse to take any responsibility for themselves/their family. If something happens, it is always someone elses fault.

My favourite bit of H&S trivia*:-

The electricity pylons in France don't have any barbed wire around the bottom to stop you climbing them. The reason, if you're stupid enough to climb them, you deserve to get fried.
Don't you just love Darwin :)

*absolutely unverified, may be complete twaddle

Well, if it's not true, it ought to be.

If people are not prepared to take responsibility for themselves, then government/legislation will have to do it for them. We now live in a nanny state, but that is only because people have let themselves get to the point that they need nannying.

    Anyway, back to the plot.

The crew of Ark Royal marched through the centre of Leeds on 8 June. Someone rang Radio Leeds to complain because it might delay them visiting a patient in the infirmary.

Makes you proud to be British......
