A 2 year old and a 5 year old - am I the only one?

For the school and nursery run, I've got a very ordinary "mountain" bike, which I use to tow an ordinary Halfords trailer. The problem is that the combined weight and size of the two children will soon be too much for the trailer.
My 5 year old daughter loves the idea of a tag-a-long, but what can I do with my son, who will be three this summer? I have gangly legs, which probably rules out any crossbar mounted seat. Adding a small trailer to the back of a tag-a-long doesn't seem like a smart move, either.
I can't be the first to have come across this. Ideas, please!

Seems like what you need is a tandem, you can pull the trailer then later swap it for a tagalong. Tandems can be expensive, but are fairly cheap and easy to make by welding old bikes together.
Alternatively your daughter will have to ride on her own bike.0 -
I bought an old Dawes tandem for about 250 pounds. It has been excellent. The handling is better suited to two than a solo, so it is much less hair-raising with kids moving about than a tag-along."It must be true, I saw it on the Internet!"0

I ride with a tagalong (plus 5 year old) on the back of a tandem (7 year old). Great fun. Yes, tandemsare expensive, a pig to store, but great fun, and much easier to ride than the more convenient tagalong.0

I have three kids 6, 4, and 2. My solution: do both! I'm pulling a tag-a-long, which in turn pulls the Chariot bike trailer with 2 kids in it. It's definitely long and is a mini-train, but it works quite well. It's amazing how much help the 6-year-old provides when pedalling. Not sure what the future holds: a tandem with a tag-a-long and a trailer?0

I use a Ibert as GT-Dave posted great seat and not to in the way for your knees as it sits a lot higher than cross bar mounted seats !
