Help with fitting new gears

Afternoon,
I wonder if someone would be able to pass on a little advise.
We foolishly purchased a 'Carera' Ladies bike from Halfords about 3 months ago, but have forever been having problems with the gears - despite having it 'set-up' twice now.

I was wondering what options we have to completely change the gears that are currently on the bike. Currently it has 24 gears operated by a Shimano twist shift mech.
We were looking at the '24 speed Shimano gear levers with integrated brake lever' but are wondering which other parts are required to fully change the complete gear setup. Would you recommend going are far as to physically change the gear sets themselves plus the derailleurs?

Many Thanks
James

Sorry guys, it looks like it has the following gears currently - from halfords website
SRAM SX4 24 speed gearing with twist shifters

shimano shifters will not be compatible with a sram mech.

You would have to replace the shifters and rear mech to go with shimano

Or opt for sram shifters to replace the current twist shifters.

SX4 arent the best gears, but I still think the problem lies with the set up - and more probably the cables. I'd strip the cables off, clean and lube them, then set the whole lot up from scratch. They often need adjusting a couple of times from new as the sytem beds in.

Park Tools has a good guide on this.
