Annoying brake setup problem
Well, perhaps the word problem is a bit harsh but it's definitely annoying.
Basically, I can't get my front brake pads as close to the rim (before the wheel starts rubbing) as my rear brake pads. So one brake lever is nice and tight but the other one needs to be pulled almost all of the way back before it really starts to bite hard.
The front wheel is completely true. I've had two separate bike mechanics look at it and I can see with my own eyes that there's no wobbling. And there are no bulges or lumps on the rim that I can feel.
The brake pads are properly adjusted, toed-in and they're equidistant from the rim on both sides. I've spent probably a good couple of hours pissing about with the tension screws making sure the centring is as near perfect as possible.
I've got the pads to the stage where the wheel just begins to rub, then backed off a tiny amount (on the barrel adjuster on the brake lever housing) so the 'bite' is as big as possible but it still isn't as good as the rear brake.
It's driving me completely nuts. Anyone got any suggestions?
Like I said, it's not really a problem (plenty good enough to ride safely) but it's infuriating.

Not yet. What are you thinking might be wrong with the cable?0 -

i agree with Andrew Turnbull, it sounds to me that you haven't got your brake cable outer at the optimal length, and/or there is some added friction somewhere in the cabling (inner cable corrosion?)
I would check that out first of all. what type of calipers are they?0 -
Just the stock V-brakes that came with the bike (Specialized Crossroads, hybrid).0
