OK so my 2003 Record bb has given up the ghost now and needs replacing. Not having attempted bb replacement before, can I do this myself or is it really best left to do by an LBS? I have the relevant tools - I think - but is it possible to fcuk it up or a doddle if you have the right tools?

Some guidance please .....

If you're ok with fixing things by yourself, it's not a difficult job once you have the right tools. But removal on the current BB might be tricky after such a long time. Fitting a replacement is easy if you have clean threads but it's easy to cross them if you're not careful.

Yep, I tried removing mine after being in there for 3 years and it is stuck solid. I did not need to change it but was just curious about how to do it. When it goes it will be down to the LBS for them to remove it.

Its easy, but be very careful particularly when screwing in the new one. DO NOT cross the threads, best to turn by hand as much as possible.

Make sure you know what threading your BB is - for Italian its RH on both sides - it's marked on the side of the cups. Record BB cups come from the factory with ample amounts of anti-seize so it's unlikely or unlucky if its seized if it hasn't been removed before. If you can't get one side to budge, try the other before you start using excessive force. Because the BB cups are alloy, it can be quite easy to damage the splines so make sure any effort is controlled and that the tool is secured firmly - ideally using a crank bolt and washer screwed into the spindle to hold it loosely in place - not too tight or you'll have no room for it to unscrew!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Thanks guys. It's English thread and I know I need the 102mm being a double crankset. I am just a little hesitant cos it has been in there so long and also the cross threading aspect.

It's not too hard if you have the tools. Hand thread it in and follow the instructions and you will be fine. I find it easier than removing the cranks!

Just removed my Veloce BB and re-greased the threads. Quite a simple op but I took everyone's advice and hand threaded them in before lightly tightening the threads with the BB tool.

The Campag instructions say the torque should be set at 70Nm which did not feel the case when I undid them (the BB was installed by my LBS).

If the origianal was greased prior to assembly, it should come out okay - if not a couple of hard taps on the spanner with a hammer should suffice. As already said, clean threads thoroughly and regrease before putting the new one in.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos
