Non circular chainring on fixed

Hi,

I was wondering how important people think it is to have a circular chain ring with fixed gear bikes? I only ask because mine is very much not circular, at one pedal position there's about an inch of vertical travel in the chain, at another practically none.

I've tried Sheldons tips for adjusting the ring on spider, but there isn't enough room for adjustment before it hits the shoulders of the spider arms.

Also could it be the spider that isn't circular ? I don't mind getting a new chain ring, but a new crankset might be a bit much.

If it's not more or less circular - and yours sounds quite bad - you're wearing the draintrain out and risk unshipping the chain completely - which would most likely unship you too. I'd fix it ASAP.
  • I wouldn't ride with it like that. If you have a spare chainring then fit it try and find out if its the spider or the ring

If the spider's not circular, nor's the chainring. So it's worth getting hold of a new known-circular ring first, and seeing if you can fit it.
If you can, then that's all you need. If you can't it's new crank time.

Thanks for the answers everyone, I've just ordered a new chain ring from HubJub (far too many nice shiny things on that website!), hopefully that'll fix ... errr ... improve things.
