As a newbie I am looking for recommendations to buy a book that will cover things such as technique, repairs etc plus explaining in simple language what all the fiddley bits on the bike does e.g. fork adjustments. I don't want a general book that covers that road riding malarky as well!

I've found Mel Allwood's book pretty clear and easy to follow. Its definitely written with beginners in mind but isn't limited to basic maintenance
Although doesn't look like its available from Amazon currently...

And Ned Overend's book is great for learning mountain biking skills...

Ned Overend book is good, but a lot of the advice is general, real-worldy advice. Dont get me wrong, its recommended, but for me it's not a great specific "how to", more a general background. makes you want to ride your bike tho!
I have Zinn's book on MTB maintenance, which is pretty good at any technical queries you have. excellent reference:

for skills - this gets some good reviews: "Mastering Mountain Bike Skills " - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mastering-Mount ... 848&sr=8-1
I might pick that up soon.0 -
