I am going to replace the cable for the front mech.

After replacing the cable will I have to reset the high / low settings, or will it be a straight swop over?

Straight swap. Just need to adjust the cable.

As above, fit the new cable and have it slightly slack (minimum tension) when you do up the clamp. Then operate the mech up and down to make sure it changes ok and reaches the outer stop. Might need another slight adjustment after i has bedded in.

Related question- if I were to replace my front mech can I just bolt the new one in on the existing cable? Bike is relatively new, just over 1000km on the existing mech+cable.

Also- could I transfer the "old" braze-on mech onto a bike currently using a clamp-on- e.g. can I clamp the braze-on mech using the clamp currently on the old bike or are they completely different (they don't look too different.)

1/ No reason to change the cable if in good condition.
2/ If your current mech is a braze on with a separate clamp then it should be OK to fit another braze on mech straight on to it.
