Help!!!

I've read so many threads on here my eyes are starting to hurt (the house is also littered with various magazines, although fortunately not the sort I'd have to hide from the Mrs!!).
I started a thread on here about the Mongoose Canaan Comp as, at the time, I'd set myself a £1k budget for a bike to return to MTBing.
My logic was that full-suss was the way forward, they always say get the frame right, you can upgrade later, so I should buy a full-suss rather than get fit again etc on a hardtail and then buy one. However, I can't help thinking that I'd be making too many compromises, whereas a hardtail would mean a pretty decent bike straight off (may actually spend £700ish, need a rack for the car, helmet etc etc, also may have to buy the Mrs a cheap bike for road use, still lets me look at Merlin Malt 2, Orange G3, Kona Caldera etc etc).
I may be asking the impossible, but given that I have no desire to drop 20ft of cliffs and that I intend to ride trail centres and some local stuff (Halifax, Leeds, Bradford way), do I need full-suss? Are they that much better in the long-term?
At my budget the hardtail selection is superb, full-suss seems kind of limited.

Test a few out. Full suss at this price is not as compromised as it used to be, and the Canaan is a well received, excellent value bike.0

Cheers as ever Supersonic. My difficulty may end up being going over budget!!!
I have a day of visiting shops on Saturday so should be clearer.....yeah right!!!0 -
Cant beat visiting the shops! Only so much we can say on a forum (narrowing it down, value etc), but nowt beats looking at them in the flesh.0

Did you know you can get the Mongoose for £750 on wiggle?

Looks like a fantastic bike for the money to me. Fox rear shock, Tora air forks, Deore / XT transmission and Hayes Stroker brakes! All good quality components.
Gets a good review from MBUK too!

Stu. I completely agree with you! One of the nest bargains I have seen. If it suits ;-)0
