Been given a bike by my brother in law. Its a Giant Peleton with Exage400EX rear mech, 7 gear cassette and biopace oval chain rings. Think it must be at least 10 years old but is in great nick with down tube shifters.

Any suggestions about what would fit in terms of groupset, bottom brackets etc to upgrade it?

I can clean a bike but never taken one to bits but fancy a go with this.

Thanks.

It's obviously an older model than my Peloton which I use as a spare winter hack, very good at that role it is too. I have 8 speed Shimano RSX which in it's day, I'm told was as good as 105. So I guess you could fit 105 as an upgrade but sounds like you would have to fit the complete groupset which you could possibly do mechanically? Hope this helps.

I like downtube shifters, but if you really wanted STI, you could fit Sora 7 speed shifters. Otherwise, the rear hub could be an issue, as it could well be either a freewheel hub (effectively limits you to 7 speeds) or an early Shimano freehub (limits you to very specific cassettes and or 7 speeds depending on whether it is UniGlide or not). If I were you, I would get some nice (Kool Stop or Fibrax) brake blocks or some modern dual pivot brakes, swap out all the cables, and ride the bike as is.

Thanks Giant and Acorn, this proves I can do something about it. Intent to use it for winter training and on the turbo.
