Dislocated thumb

Hi,

I dislocated my thumb 2 weeks ago & had the splint off yesterday. Still very sore, swollen & stiff - virtually no movement in the joint nearest the nail. The doctor says it will take 4-6 weeks to get the movement back :(

Anyone have any experience of this?

I don't think I can stand another 6 weeks of road cycling!!!

ive suffered a broken thumb, quite painfull lol, rest is the answer, and then physio if the movement doesnt increase. dont rush it though because if it doesnt heal properly now it will bug you till you die...

  • I had a 15mph road stack 24 Feb. Broken thumb, collar bone and hip. The thumb is still painful and I can't get full movement. I'm getting treatment from a NHS Physio specialising in hands and doing exercises she's given me. I reckon it's going to be at least another 3-6 months before it settles down. Insist on seeing a physio to give you some relevant excercises. Alternating heat with cold can help as well. Also Bromelain a natural anti inflamatory (does the same job as Ibuprufen) Try www.healthspan.co.uk

Thanks for the advice. I'm hoping a dislocation is nothing like as bad as a broken thumb.

That sounds a very nasty stack Ian.

  • Last October at the age of 60 I thought it was time to reduce the rough and tumble of off road falls and buy another road bike. After all you don't fall off so much on the road do you? True, but when you hit tarmac it's unforgiving. I hit some loose and did a high sider. Split the Sworks 2D helmet in two and had a massive bruise.. If I hadn't been wearing it I think I'd have been dead.

When I came off my head hit the ground (root) first causing a dent in the helmet & some very large cracks. Perfect for showing my kids the importance of wearing a helmet.

One of my neighbours is a roadie & he came off his bike not so long ago breaking a few ribs in the process. His wife had to drag him to hospital but even though he was in a lot of pain he was soon back training!

  • i dislocated my thumb a couple of times when younger, first playing Rugby, caught it in the collar of an oponants shirt during a 'hand off'! amd secondly playing Volleyball! both times it popped back in but did swell up like a balloon!

it does take a while to heal properly but if you strap it up well it helps the process no end!
just so happened i had mine strapped up seemed a perfect fit around a pint glass! 8) mine were back to normal in 2-3 weeks!

thumbs are one of those things that you dont realise how much you use them until you cant!! (like putting on socks!!!)

I'd start icing it if you are not already doing so. Ice cube massage is good - just get an ice cube and rub it around on the affected joint.
After do some gentle movement just bending and straightening the joint, you can guide it a bit with the other hand, but don't force it at this stage
