Campag Record Chain

The dude at my LBS is adamant about not fitting the latest Record chain with my Record groupset. He recommends either a Shimano Ultegra chain or an older spec Campag chain, claiming that the new Record chain causes excessive wear on the cassette.

I'm a bit puzzled as I've never heard this before. At the same time this guy uses the same combination himself, and believe me, he's no fool when it comes to either building or riding bikes.

Grateful for any views on this.

Hmm, I wouldn't use any Campag or Shimano chain, I'd always use a KMC or Wippermann chain. These tend to more reliable because they haven't got the old fashioned joining pin, and use reusable joining links - this means it's easier to open the chain to clean it.

  • Be careful with chain widths (internal as well as external).

As stated above. You can use the appropriate KMC or Wipperman fine. Personally I run a Record chain with a KMC joining link instead of the convoluted Campag joining method. It works perfectly and I can remove the chain easily if necessary.

This tool is handy for these sorts of questions:
    http://www.wheelworks.co.nz/drivetrain.php

"A Shimano 10 speed chain will run on 10 speed Campagnolo chainrings, however the inside width of the chain is slightly too narrow which can result in excess drivetrain noise and poor performance."

In short what your LBS is recommending will work but is not a great idea - I run a KMC chain with Record and it's a good combination. The KMC link allows you to remove the chain and easily give it a good clean.

KMC chains are cheap at www.merlincycles.co.uk

    Another vote for KMC.
  • + 1 for KMC - deliciously crisp positive shifts everytime with my chorus set up.

I dont fully understand the Campag linh arrangement can some one explain how it works and how to insert a KMC link to a Campag chain please?
  • Yes. When you get the chain, you throw away the several joining links they give you and join the chain with a KMC link instead :)

What if the chain is already fitted to the bike?

Take a link out and insert a KMC joining link in it's place.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos
  • cut the chain to leave two "inner" links ,the joining link replaces the two "outer "plates

Can't see why anyone would want to go to the bother of taking a chain off the bike to clean it.

I don't take it off to clean it anymore, but it's always good to option of taking the chain off without having to break it.

i've just removed a record 10 narrow chain and replaced with a SRAM red hollow pin chain (on record cassette) and i can tell you it is sweet. .very quiet and smooth shifting. think it is lighter also.
