Changing gear shifters

Hi,

Can anybody help me with some advice on changing from traditional shimano shifters on the tube to brake lever based shifters such as on more modern bikes please?

I have seen a bike at work where the fella seems to have swapped the levers for a guide like part which the gear cable flows through to the brake lever shifters. Not sure where to look for this and whether it's a home job or better done at the local bike shop.
