Hi, looking for help - :?
I have a cycle to work voucher for £1000 and I feel in a slight dilemma.
I'm looking tol buy my first proper road-bike which will be used for occasional summer commuting and the odd triathlon but not sure what is the best to go for. (62cm frame size)

For £999 the Trek 5000 (07) looks to have won me over, with it's full carbon frame and great feel.

Plus the guys at the bike shop were very helpful, unlike Evans and CycleSurgery.

I've had these two other bikes in the running, but now a bit unsure:

Bianchi B4P 1885 TB Hydro Carbon Veloce 10 speed Double (£999)
http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=87028
and
Wilier Lavaredo Veloce 2007 (£999)

Any help / opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Lozza

I had a Trek 5000 which I loved; really comfortable, fast bike. Same model year but in blue. Full carbon from a helpful LBS versus aluminum from a large chain/internet is a no brainer

(That would be the Trek, then ;-)
  • I have a Trek 5500, very happy with it for comfort and rideability. Full carbon frame and forks a joy to ride. Only a very very average weekend warrior but enjoy what time I get to spend riding it.

IMHO you would get more value for money going for a mass produced carbon frame/forks.

Dont be put off thinking you need to buy an exclusive brand/bike no one else in a 50 mile radius has, Trek may in many eyes be so "uncool" or whatever but better to buy a bike you will get pleasure from riding than trying to impress the local BLING POLICE!

I may be biased but have put my money where mouth is.

another vote for the trek. A full carbon bike for a grand is excellent value and it's your legs that will get you up the hills, not the decals on the frame.

I have read that Trek get this frame made in the far east rather than the US like their higher cost frames and that's how they are able to offer this price level. The Bling Police (like that name ! ) would have you believe that a bike's no good unless it's French/Italian/etc, but a surprising number of "european" bikes are sourced from the far east.

I've got an older Trek CF frame (2002) and it's excellent. If Chris Boardman had ridden a Trek & won Le Tour then every UK club run would be full of Trek bikes, but instead an abrasive American did which means "Treks are mass-produced American junk".... just ignore the hype, your option looks good VFM to me.

I've also got a Bianchi SL framed bike which looks very much like the one you list from Evans. It rides well but after 3yrs of careful use the paint is blistering. In contrast, the 2002 Trek still looks mint. I do like riding the Bianchi but the finish isn't as durable and I wouldn't buy another.

A vote for the Wilier, there something differant that you don't see at every club ride and race in the country and my dad has the laverado Chrono TT bike which he loves. Not sure about the campag though...
