I want to upgrade the chainset on my Giant SCR2 to a Shimano Tiagra triple. To do this would I just need these parts?

Shimano Tiagra Triple 4503

Shimano 4500 BB Cups

I've read something about having the frame faced. Would I need to do this?

Nah, nothing that says special edition - however place I got it from ran out of 2007s and gave me a 2008 at reduced price. Some dodgy brakes on it, not tiagras or sora just plain, I thought it was meant to come with Tiagra brakes. Also, my saddle is some Selle Royal thing, and I'm sure it was meant to be something else.

Just curious here how does that chainset/cranks fit onto that style bottom bracket ?

Hi, the Tiagra Hollowtech chainset and BB cups will be a good upgrade for your bike, i have them on my Trek Pilot.
In theory you should get your LBS to cut the BB faces flat before fitting the bearing cups, i just used sandpaper on a block of wood to remove any lumpy paint from the faces and the bearings are working fine.
For the benefit of "Moray Gub" the bearings screw into each side of the BB frame instead of a traditional sealed BB. The drive side crank has the axle attached which pushes through the bearings and the other crank clamps on to the axle. Very simple and effective.
