Cable Adjuster - Clockwise limit ?

Ok, I have to start off by saying I have the I.Q. of a pint of urine when it comes to bike tech, so here goes ...
I'm trying to adjust my rear mech so the chain isn't whining like a chav in an jobcentre whos been asked to stop being abusive. It's pretty quiet on the downshift but upshifting is noisy (to smaller sprockets) and slightly delayed. As far as I can tell I need to adjust the barrel in a clockwise direction but I seem to have maxed it out (it has become resistant).
I've thought of releasing the cable and turning the cable adjuster anti-clockwise and reattaching the cable, but i'm not sure how taught the cable should be. At the moment in top gear (smallest sprocket) the cable seems a little floppy.
what do i do ? :?

If it is clockwise you need to turn it (i.e. slacken off the cable, which would do quicker downshifts on a normal [non-rapid-rise] mech), then yeah, you want to loosen off the bolt.
Worth checking you can't get any more slack out of the adjuster on the shifter, though.
For getting the right tenson, follow this (skip out the screw adjustment and go straight to 'Checking the Rear Indexing Adjustment' near the bottom of the page).
