In my search to get an updated freehub body for a disc wheel i have been asked to take some pics of the freehub body etc and send it to zipp.....

Now... i am having trouble getting the freehub off, i have looked at video's on youtube, read the bits on the parktools website but not getting very far

Managed to get a dust cap off each end , drive and other (seen in photo, drive on the right) but other than that im stumpted....

the back i can't see anything to undo...

Seen videos suggesting you put a hex wrench in, but the barel of the axel is smooth and nothing in there to bite a hex wrench....

Nothing to screw onto on the top....

Only thing there is, is this, 4 holes bit bigger than a paper clip wire round the bareings

Any input would be appricaited as dont want to damage anything

Thanks

With a normal set up you need to remove the spindle then insert an allen key,10mm I think.
The allen bolt that holds the freehub to the hub is hollow so the spindle can pass through it.
You need to figure out how to remove the Zipp spindle.

yea thats what im having trouble with, a 5mm alen key won't fit in, and a 4mm is to small to hold it in one place, so must be something else, might be worth an email to zipp lol

    Anyone dismantled any zip freehubs?

looks like a straight forward smack the crapout of the axle to push the bearings out first. then remove axle and then look to remove the freebody.

a soft faced mallet BUT what is the axle made from? alloy.... take care.

Also the axle may only be removed in one direction if after one bearing comes out you may need to push the other out before the axle will come out.

the marks you high lighted look like the remains of the bearing race on the body for cone and cup bearings. The races are just machined to allow a industrial bearing to fit.

please note this is just an MTBers view on the problem and i have not knowingly seen any Zipp wheels! but it does not look to different

I've not done Zipps before but it looks very similar to Xero and Hope hubs. They just have cartridge bearings which you need to whack out.

The cartrdge bearing on the freehub side needs to be pushed out so you can see how the freehub is attached to the hub. On Shimano hubs it's held with a 10mm allen bolt which you undo from the freehub side. On Xero it's 11mm IIRC.

Anyway, one or both of the cartridge bearings needs to come out. Have you tried Zipps website for a technical drawing or how-to? I'd be tempted to give it a whack from the freehub side and try and push the other side bearing out.
