Another one of those 9 speed/10 speed compatibility questions I'm afraid.

Can I use a 10 speed Ultegra front derailleur on a 9 speed chainset or is there some issue with the chainring spacing? It's a triple by the way.

Thanks.

If the chain is also 9sp it is not advisable as the cage is a little narrower and will be more likely to rub. No problem with ring spacing, most after market chainsets are 9/10sp anyway.

    Hi there.

On the other hand, my cross bike has 9 speed chainrings on an otherwise 10 speed set up, and I've never noticed any difference.

    Cheers, Andy

    what john said

    10spd chain - okay
9spd chain - probably not a good idea - chain rub etc.

So if I use 10 speed front and rear mechs, 10 speed chain, the 9 speed chainset with TA 8/9/10 speed chainrings - it should all work with my 9 speed Ultegra shifters?

The full story is now begining to unfold. You do not want to know if you can run a 9sp chainset with an otherwise 10sp setup.
If you are running 9sp STIs and cassette it is not wise to use a 10sp chain. It will work but not as well as a 9sp one. The 10sp front mech is more likely to suffer chain rub so I would not advise it. Use a 9sp one.
If you are running 10sp STIs and cassette you can use a 9sp chainset with no problem and can use a 10sp front mech. A 9sp one will still work but may need the tips of the cage closing slightly for best operation. I have this on a bike with a SRAM compact fitted. It works fine. You can also run a 9sp rear mech on 10sp with no problem.
I am not sure what you are trying to achieve but I hope I have covered most posibilities.

    just buy a 9spd front mech 8)

    everything else will be fine

(9spd everything apart from the rear mech which will be fine at 10spd)

Yep, sorry about that, I was just running through the compatabilty issues out of interest.
