Freehub - how much grease?
Was checking my bike over last night and noticed the freehub nut was loose (it's a Campag Centaur from about 2002). I went to tighten the nut but before I knew where I was the freehub had slipped off the axel
Anyway I decided to take the opportunity to put some grease (Finish Line teflon white stuff) in but I am not sure if I have over done it. Is it possible to put in too much grease and risk the pawls sticking?
I have put it back together and it is virtually silent but it doesn't seem to freewheel as long as it did before but this might just be my imagination. However with the White Rose Classic on Sunday I don't want to be stuck in the middle of the Yorks Dales with a knackered hub.
Is this going to be OK or should I take it apart again and take a bit of the grease out?

I overhauled my freehub a few months back so went searching on the interweb for tips and the consensus seemed to be not to use grease at all but oil. Grease is too thick for the job apparently, and makes it difficult for the pawls to re-engage.
Motor oil seems to be popular, but any thick oil would do I guess. I used some Finish Line wet lube because it was all I had lying around and I needed to get the bike back on the road. Seems to be working okay so far. Spinning freely and nice and quiet too.0 -
I have used Finish Line grease on my Campag freehub internals over the years and have had no problems-it does make it quieter as well. A thicker grease may cause the pawls to stick, and oil will run out as the seals aren't exactly water ( or oil) proof.

Not quite the same I know, but on my MTB Mavic and Hope wheels I've used grease without problems.
I've actually got the official DT Swiss kit for my DT240 hubs and that also has a small tub of grease for the freehub too. In fact here is the grease in question:
