I have a mate with a 2001-ish Klein Attitude Comp that he is looking to refresh with a new fork, new wheels and new brakes. A number of questions have arisen:

1. Rear Disc mount

This bike has the old 22mm chainstay rear disc mount:

I've seen this referred to as a "Hayes mount" and an A2Z AD-PMR adapter should convert it to disc:

Has anybody tried this adapter?

More info under "Other" here: http://www.a2zcomponents.com/ada.htm

2. Fork choice

I think it would be true to the bike to go for something no-frills and light. He'd need something that wouldn't alter the bike's geometry (I'd guess something in the 80-100 mm travel range, but that is a guess).

The old fork is on the bike, what should he be measuring? Skewer to top of crown?

Informed opinions welcome!

adaptor works. check what size disc/caliper will fit.

    axle to lower bearing race.

have a look in the MTB FAQ's for currentish axle to crown heights.

    That's a great help, thank you Nick. Link: http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12563493

Oh, and I have discovered that a friend with an old Trek has used the A2Z bracket successfully with a Magura Marta front calliper.

be careful. front and rear calipers do not mean the same sized disc.

    see the disc brake sticky.

He's running a 160mm rotor with this set up, FYI. That's a nice solution because the A2Z site suggests that you will need a larger rotor (presumably using a rear calliper):

"Requires increasing rotor size 20 - 25mm. Please make sure your frame will accept a larger rotor prior to ordering."

Tried similar brake adapter of Ebay on my 99 Klein Attitude Comp and it wouldn't fit as it fouled on the frame . Mind you i have a small frame so you may be lucky if you've a medium or large. Do a search for disc brake in the Klein forum on MTBR.com. Theres a couple of ways around it if the adapter doesn't fit.....

    Thanks Mark.

Was it the adapter itself that fouled the frame? He's orderedone anyway, can always flog it again. I expect that he has a larger frame than your's, he's a tall bloke.

Thanks for the linkm I'll report back with developments!

    Mark,

I've been thinking about this over the weekend and I realised that I'd failed to ask you the obvious question: what did you do next? Did you settle for V-brakes or did you find another way to fit a disk calliper to the rear of your Arttitude Comp?

Yes bracket fowled on seatstay. I managed to get a some old stock G1 calipers directly from Hayes that didnt need an adapter. They bolt straight on. I then matched them up with HX9 levers off Ebay, bled them and they work justfine. According to Hayes the calipers also share the same seals etc as current models so servicing no prob. Wasn't the cheapest option but really wanted discs on my old Klein. Maybe oneday if i need to upgrade i'll fabricate my own brackets.
