My forks were squeaking so I decided to take them apart clean and re-grease them, the only problem is that I was a little hasty and forgot how to put them together.

I cant work out the order of the washers etc.

I have
2 metal ring/cups, (stacks)
1 metal ring
2 ball bearing rings (1 top/bottom)
cover for bottom
cover for top
plastic spacer

The problem when i put it together is that theres movement horizontally to a very bad extent, so my guess was one of the rings 'secures' the fork inside the headtube to stop it moving but havnt found out how yet

Thanks in advance.

erm, it should stop moving when you tighten up the top cap a little to tension it all up. When it stops moving (although obviously it must still rotate freely) then you've tightened it enough.
once you've got that sorted, THEN you tighten the stem clamp on to the steerer tube, to keep it all in place.

have a look at the pictures on parktools.
