Front Mech Problem

I have been given a Saracen Raw Pro (from 2004/2005), it's absolutely immaculate, a family friend bought it for her son but has sat in her garage ever since.

But....I'm having real trouble with the front mech, it rubs the rear tyre when in the lowest cog. There seems no way to set it up without having to twist the bloody thing round the seat tube, completely buggering up the gearing.

The tyres are massive Tioga things, the wheel is centred in the frame, I'm completely stuck on this. It seems it has a wrong mech attached.....any ideas?

Please help......

Have the tyres been upgraded, if so, maybe they're just too thick.

No, I checked the specs, they are the standard tyres.

I think a tyre change would sort it out, though surely the standard mech should be compatible with the standard tyres.

When on the smallest cog the inner cage should be 1-2mm away from the chain, and your outercasing adjustment barrel (the turny thing on the shifter) or adjustment screws may need tweaking.

    What are normal sized tyres?....1.95....2.1??

I think they are 2.4 or 2.5 on it now.

Just been working on the bike, the tyres are tioga factory DH 2.1. Not that big I don't think.

The chain when in it's lowest gears (small front, large rear) is almost touching, let alone the front mech cage. The only way I can get it to work (very badly) at all is to rotate the clamp on the seat tube round so the cage is crooked.

If it's just a case of getting a new front mech no problem, but I think I'll have the same issue unless you can get a shot cage mech.

Or should I just skip the bike and but a new one....

Tioga DH tyres come up a lot bigger than stated. New tyres is the solution, or get a longer bottom bracket axle.

from previous experience with a Raw, the tyre clearance is quite small... maybe a skinny back tyre is the way to go...

Thanks guys, just replaced the rear tyre with another the same size (2.1) and all is well, the front mech is now setup and working fine.

That Tioga tyre was a good 1.5-2cm bigger at the tread edge.
