Specialized......... why does everyone seem to ride 'em (not literally of course), seems that wherever you are, you are more likely to see Stumpjumpers, Enduros et al than other types of bike.

I was at llandegla a few weeks back and in a group of 8 riders, 6 had Specialized bikes ffs(and no, they definately were not sponsored).

Why do they seem so popular, curious to hear peoples opinions?

Massive company so they can sell bikes at a good price yet seem to retain a decent level of quality through a big R&D budget.

Sort of the Audi of bikes maybe?

I agree, they are the Audi of bikes.
They make great machines, and invest in a load of R&D, and drive technology on quite well.
However, I wouldn't personally buy one, because I strongly object to the way they patented the Horst link suspension design. In that respect, they are very, very much like Audi.

You know you're getting a decent bike when you buy a Specialized. Sort of the industry standard.

I would say more like BMW... the 'exclusive' (ahem) 3 series now outsells the 'common'/rep mobile Mondeo.

Lifetime guarantee on some frames as well, and they look great! Well, most of them do, I've seen a few mingers.

Yep, I once saw someone who had an S-Works hardtail all black and red.... looked an absolute dog.

Just kidding, stunning bike you have there! 8)

My roadie is a 2007 Specialized Allez Sport.

I think it's great, I use it to try and stay reasonably fit.

I wanted a decent quality bike and with the discount when the 2008 bikes was the best for the money that I could try.

However, everyone has Spez MTBs, it seems, and for that reason and the fact I've always wanted one, I'm getting an Orange. A G3.

Nothing wrong with a Rockhopper, but at least 2 of my freinds have them.

    I like to be different.....

Loads of shops sell 'em as well.
I suppose they occupy that 'golden mean' of bikes, 'does exactly as it says on the tin'. If ya want dearer stuff with more exclusivity go elsewhere; if ya want cheaper stuff, get some chinese dudes to sweat away and coat it in naughty, naughty lead paint.

I thought most bike companies did lifetime guarantee on all frames these days?

'cos they're brilliant!! all of the ones ive ridden have left me with a big old grin on my face!! some other havent had quite the same effect!

when i got my enduro i was half expecting the grin factor to dissapear after a few months, but nope, its stronger than ever!!

I have a confession to make - I bought my Specialized mostly because it was red :D

It's the first bike I ever bought, and when I bought it I had no idea what differentiated one bike from another apart from colour. Other factors did come into play, like it being within budget and it felt great when I took it for a little test ride too. I've been really pleased with it (and even have learned a bit more about it since then ;) )

Cannot get much better than that.

I have a rockhopper - it came down to what range the LBS were doing the year I bought. Wanted to buy / try a bike in person and it was either spec or marin. Only citys really have shops with a wide range of suppliers - and the idea of travelling just to have something that 'looks different' may have appealed 15 years ago but I just wanted to get on it and cycle!

PS it was a great buy :D

To echo some previous posts, my Allez road bike was bought largely because it was easily available. I got to try it in different sizes without having to order anything in. It was getting good reviews, so there was no reason to wait.
