Afternoon all.
I'm soon to be new to road cycling. I've done a bit of XC and trials in the past.
I've now got a Trek 1.7 on the way and after I've got to grips with it I'd like to start riding with a club. I've found Liverpool Mecury but was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of any other cycling clubs in Liverpool?
Cheers

Hi OTR,
Thanks for that. I had assumed that this club was no more given that I havn't been able to get to their website over the past couple of weeks.
Are you a member? Do you ride with a club in Liverpool?
Cheers
Matt0 -
Yes I'm a member but I haven't been out with them lately.
They have Sunday rides, usually about 50 - 60 miles, they go at the pace of the slowest rider. And they have Wednesday evening rides, what they call Come and Try, these are usually about 12 miles.
They also have club time trials on the last Wednesday of each month.0 -
Join Century, you won't regret it. There is a wide range of cyclists doing all kinds of disciplines. As On the Road said, Wed night 6-45 - 7 from Tarbock Village Hall is the social ride with a real mix of cyclists, Sun leaves at about 9 from Tarbock Village Hall and is the main club run, doing 50 -60 miles also sometimes 90 miles. On both these rides you will never get left behind. If you want to train harder there are chain gangs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Where do you live?0
-
Hi Winky,
I'm in Croxteth Country Park.
Is Century just show up and go or is there someone I should call first?
Tarbock Villiage Hall, is that in Prescot?
Cheers

It's here, that building below the marker is where we meet.0
-
Thanks OTR.
I'll get myself sorted with some kit and then come for a ride with you guys.

The rides are led by Steve Schofield. You don't have to call anybody just turn up. Make sure you give yourself time to get there as they will leave pretty much on time. Have you got any specific ambitions?0
-
No specific ambitions as yet. I've done a lot of rowing in the past and I would imagine that it wont take me long to become unpleasantly competitive so I'm just going to start out by doing whatever seems like the most fun.
I don't think that my 'build' has me particularly marked for cycling stardom haha0 -
Did you row in Liverpool? Can you recomend anywhere? My girlfirend wants to give it a try. I can't convince her to cycle0
-
In Liverpool your options are:
Runcorn Rowing Club (Runcorn..... obviously)
Liverpool Victoria Rowing Club (the docks)
Mersey Boat Club (Also on the docks)
It depends on what your gf wants from rowing. Liverpool Vics is a shocking piece of water but quite a social club. Mersey boat club is convenient to get to if you're near the centre of town but a waste of time for rowing. Runcorn rowing club is a fantastic piece of water with a club that is having money pumped into it at the moment and is a good shout for starting out.
If she's serious tho I'd advise a drive to Agecroft on the Salford quays of over to one of the chester clubs. I think that Grovesnor are the chester club of the moment.
Be warned, if she gets hooked on rowing she will be training every day of the week before you know it at one of the clubs further away and the time that you do spend with her she'll be sleeping for.0 -

She used to be quite a good swimmer and after an injury can't get back to training. She is hoping that rowing might allow her to train. She used to do butterfly so she has good upper body strength. Thanks for that info!0
-
No problem0
-
Hope you don't mind me coming in on your thread with the same question but this time for the Runcorn area? a club like the LiverpoolCentury club which has a turn up and try run? Or just a few buddies who go out regularly who wouldn't mind another buddie tagging on?0
-
There is Halton Vc, but I have no idea about them. If you speak to Chris in John Geddies cycles in Widnes he might be able to point you in the direction of a ride. he is a really good guy.

found that link, they are down at the bottom of the page.0 -
Thanks for the info winkywonky, I just might give him a ring. Anybody know anything about Warrington Road club http://www.warringtonroadclub.com/index.htm or the Weaver valley cycling club? http://www.weavervalleycc.org.uk/.0
-
I think you should deffo check out Liverpool Mercury who are sponsored by: Dolan , Aintree Osteopaths , Pure Transfer Limited.
I rode a small event yesterday and ended up hooking up with their Clubs riders. There were about 30 riders from that club. All of them were friendly and the riding was top notch.
here is their website here.. http://liverpoolmercury.co.uk

I can ask around about Warington Raod club, we have one of their juniors at our club, so somebody must have an idea.0
-
DOOBZ, I got all excited, great web site, lots of members sounds ideal until I looked at the clubs meeting place on the map too far for me to travel unfortunately but ta for the info.
Winkywonky, if you don't mind asking about the Warrington club I'd be grateful
No one any idea on the Weaver Valley club?0 -
Warrington RC

I still haven't got round to giving them another look.0 -
Yikes, Warrington roadies sound a little too full on for a newbie such as me, Andy_wrx did you find a club that you are happy with?0
-
No, sorry, I haven't yet. Haven't been trying too hard I admit.
I did go out with Warrington Tri for a while (I also run, so was dabbling with tri's until I eventually decided I hated swimming too much :?).
But they're mostly training for shorter tri events so they weren't doing the distances I wanted, and I wasn't swimming with them, and was running with the running club, so...
But nice bunch of people, all sorts of standards, very welcoming.
I've been out a couple of times with Leigh Premier and they seemed pretty decent, but they're based North of Warrington so not handy for you.
And I've done a few club TT's with Seamons and they were OK, but they're in Altrincham which is as bad.
I dunno. If you are a newbie, you'll need a club which is able to cater for someone your standard but will also be able to encourage and assist you to step up a level or two as you gain experience & speed.
Some cycling clubs are full-on race clubs as you put it and don't have the scope to cater for different levels.
And cycling clubs generally have a reputation for not welcoming newcomers, which is why some of them are struggling to get any new blood in.
I guess it's just a matter of trying a few clubs and seeing how it goes.
I've been running for a while, cycling for less.
There are three running clubs in Warrington, I'm a member of one and I know people in the other two.
I know that if someone comes to us then there's an effort made to welcome them, work-out what sort of standard they are and introduce them to other people of the same level, we have different groups from county-class quick down to want-to-get-fit beginners, we have qualified coaches and organised track training sessions for those who want it or simple social runs for those who don't.
One of the other clubs is similar, they're a bit smaller and less organised, but they'd make you welcome.
But the third other club is not at all welcoming for newcomers, particularly beginners, almost check you out before they'll let you join, are a lot more scary.0 -
I might see some Warrington club members at a race on Tuesday, I'll ask them if I go.
Liverpool Century are a very welcoming club, but I guess they would be too far away!0 -
It's maybe a case of Hobsons choice but if I have to travel a little by car to find an accommodating club then I will do that, Liverpool Century do sound ideal0
-
Just seen this post. I am the press officer for Liverpool Mercury. We have a new site, which should go live in the next few days, so if you want to have a look, then feel free.
It's: http://liverpoolmercury.terapad.co.uk
We will be switching it over to the old domain name in the next few days but if anyone is wanting to join, then there is plenty of info on there.
We have two groups, one for the racers and the other for the sportive riders. Both are good groups and there is plenty of parking for people who find it quicker to drive to our hq before joining us on one of our enjoyable clubruns0 -
when you find the right club in Liverpool, will you ask them if they've seen my wheels I'd like them back
from a true manc - sorry couldn't resist it0 -
Sorry guys but I've just read this post and feel I need to clarify something.
There's only one rowing club in Liverpool - Mersey Rowing Club - and it most certainly isn't a waste of time for rowing. Liverpool Victoria is based in Wirral, not Liverpool and Runcorn's all the way over the water in Cheshire.
Mersey have expanded massively over the last twelve months and have recorded its highest number of regatta wins since the club was founded. We've more than doubled the club membership this summer and have governing body trained coaches training beginners and senior rowers.
I hope your girlfriend found somewhere good to row... if she's still looking, get her to come along to Mersey and we'd be glad to teach her to row.
Cheers, Andy0 -
