Old Bill on the Kings Road

Friday night rush hour on the Kings Road and I was stuck behind two officers of the law, riding side by side at about 10mph. They were too busy chatting away to notice the red light at a junction and just carried on through, with two cars having to stop (which I also don't think that they noticed). Once the lights had changed to green I caught up with them and had a bit of jocular banter.

"hey guys, easier for the rest of us to get past if you ride in single file"

"oh, yeah - sorry mate"

"do you know that you went through a red light back there?"

"no we didn't. It was amber"

"actually it was red"

"you might be right there" queue cheeky grin from John T Law

Wished them adieu and went on my way. They were nice friendly lads, but didn't seem like natural cyclists  . However, I wish that they had seen the double-trailered lorry (White Rose Laundries Ltd) which overtook me further down the road and came close to crushing me against railings when he cut in too early. For the first time in ten years of commuting I had to stop and compose myself before carrying on. If I hadn't braked, then I would have died and that really shook me up.

I remember seeing a little line of four or so police on bikes in Hyde Park ... riding up a no cycling path.

I've done it once, when I was so desperate to have a wee that I thought if I dismounted I'd wet meself so I rode to the toilets in the middle of the park.

That police station in the middle of Hyde Park - the one with a road-sized pedestrian path running from Marble Arch to it - has been a source of annoyance to me for about 2 years now! It's a mich nicer way to get to the middle road (where a cycle path is present) and is easily wide enough to be safe, but isn't a cycle path.

I got pulled over by police on several occasions on this path - they were never on foot - once by a cycle copper and 4 times by police coming up behind me in cars (on the pedestrian path) and putting the sirens on!

I know it's the law and all, but grrrrrr!!!
