How often to change your chain -Always getting it wrong!

Hi,
I always get this wrong and end up with a new cassette and a new chain which ends up very expensive.
I ride three times a week at 20 miles a time, should I be changing the chain every 6 months to avoid changing both ?
Also if you do change early how much longer does the cassette last ?
Is it better just to ride them both into the ground ?
I tend to buy Sram chains and the PG990 Cassette as this is kinder to the Hope Pro 2.
Any advice ?

I use a chain wear checking tool to tell me when mine is due.
Got a park tool one from CRC for about £6 and its brill!Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)
Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)
Carrera virtuoso - RIP0 -
As Dav1
If you can fit the tool between the links it's time for a new chain!0 -
Depends on your weight, trail conditions etc. Don't judge wear by time frame, measure and change accordingly, 6 months of wet sandy muck and you could be looking at new chain, cassette, chainrings and jockey wheels.
Can you tell I'm overweight and don't check often enough!! :oops:0
