8 speed Campy hub
Hi guys,
Got a zip disc that is an old 8 speed campag hub, now i understand that 8 speed is not compaitble with 9/10 unlike shimano.
Don't want to get ride of the disc really, but am after my options to put it to 10 speed?
Seen mention of doing a freehub body swap, getting a custom cassette that will fit..?
any one done it and could give me some advice?
Thanks
Will

Depends on what model of wheel you have and whether it's possible to source the right type of freehub. If all else fails, you could replace the spacers on an 8 speed cassette to the same as 10 speed and wind the limit screws on your mech to make sure it doesn't over shift - that way you'll get the indexing OK with your shifters. According to the oracle of Sheldon Brown, 8 speed sprockets are 1.9mm whereas 10 speed are 1.7mm which in the grand sceme of things is fairly minor. Highpath Engineering would be able to make you a set of 2.22mm spacers to get the index spacing OK for 10 speed and you'll probably need a thin spacer at the end to take up the slack.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

cheers for the info monty.
Being a complete newbie to campag, are all cogs seperate unlike shimano that all i've ever had is the bottom two seperate and the rest rivited together?
Also could you point me in the direction of how i would find out the hub details? :S sorry thats a very open ended question!
Thanks

I can't match my hub to either of those, and my 8 speed shimano cassette won't go on it :S
Doesn't look campag to me? any ideas?
It does have a cassette on it that the lock ring says campag, and the splines on the cassette do match what i think is 8 speed campag from the previous links :S0 -
If you check out www.sheldonbrown.com there's some useful info on cassettes and spacing which might help you identify what you've got. Campagnolo 8 speed has a different spline pattern to 9/10 speed but you should still be able to find a cassette. It really depends on whether the freehub is in good condition or you can find a cassette. whether you can split a cassette into individual sprockets depends on the model - Mirage or Veloce are generally OK, but the higher gruppo are mounted in clusters on carriers and are unseperable.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
