I had an unfortunate incident yesterday in which my cassette for no apparent reason decided to eat my rear mech  which has left it extremely twisted and unusable along with a snapped hanger. So my question is can I use a mech which says it is 9-speed on an 8-speed cassette?
I am considering something like this: (Shimano LX M580)

In the description it just says
And also reviews seem pretty good on the 'Rapid Rise' any views?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Ben

Will work just fine! Set up and adjust as normal.
RapidRise reverses the derailer spring, so it pulls to the smaller (big cogs) gears. Has the effect of reversing what the triggers on the shifter do. It can help downshifts, but its [personal preference really.0 -
Thanks for the help I think I might just give it a go then!0
