Could someone please tell me the difference between 6 bolt disc wheels and centre lock wheels?
Does it refer to the type of disc brake that I would attach to the wheel?

many thanks in advance.

one has 6 bolts to fix it to the hub and the other uses a splined center lock ring.

it refers to how the disc rotor is attached to the hub.

there are two current standards in use, shimano mostly use centrelock (but do also use 6 bolt), all other manufacturers use 6 bolt mounts

6 bolt is exactly what it says 6 bolts hold the rotor to the hub, centre lock is locking ring that clamps the disc onto a splined hub.

If you look at your wheels assuming you have discs then see how yours are attached to the hub, more than likely a 6 bolt fitting.

Crikey! That was quick. Thanks to all that responded so quickly.

Here's my next stupid question. The Mavic Crossmax st comes in a standard 9mm axle version and now a 20mm axle version. So would a Rockshox Reba Team fit the standard 9mm version or the 20mm axle version?
Also why is there now a 20mm axled wheel?

    Cheers

this years reba is 9mm. next years reba will come with a 20mm axle option as do other forks.

Nicklouse, is the increase in the axle size based on the theory that it would make for a stronger fork at the dropout?

    stiffer. for more extreme use.

Most DH, FR and AM forks now have axle of 20mm some bigger and there is a new fox/ shimano standard with a 15mm axle.

Does that means that 20mm and 9mm axels have same strenght?

No otherwise there would be no point in the 20mm axle as it's heavier. It's just a different standard.

Another question on the original topic, is there any advantage of centre lock over 6-bolt or vice-versa?
My current wheelset has centre lock hubs and rotors but most brakes seem to come with 6 bolt rotors
