Bah I posted a thread at exactly the same time (I've deleted it now), obviously the Raymond Poulidor/Jan Ullrich of thread starters
Good ride by Philip Deignan, 6th fastest so far.0 -
Haha looks like afx got in the act too, we had three threads dedicted to one stage started simultaneously0
-
So did I! Mine's gone too but I'll repeat my comment about the snazziness of the those police uniforms. Awesome use of the feather.0
-
I so want to be there. I'd love to have a go at this course myself, though they'd probably need a calendar to time me.
Did anyone see the RAI feature earlier on where they showed the elicottero airlifting the TV bikes back down the hill?0 -
Kiryienka becomes the latest in a long line of bike tossers so far this season. Not much panache though. Worse than Ricco's effort, even. 2 out of 10.0
-
Kiryienka's not too good with bikes is he? He's the rider whose bike turned up at the start of the Points Race at the Worlds without its rider. To be fair on him he did go on to win the race.0
-
He was also the rider that caused the big crash that wiped out Brad McGee. He ended up in a hedge and his bike ended up in the middle of the bunch.0
-
Contador's pink helmet and sunglasses combo looks very fetching 8) *goes on eBay*0
-
I didn't notice, I was transfixed by that scab on his elbow
3 in a row for Sella?0 -
Has Sella always been this good???0
-
im sure this will only make Contador drive home harder but amazing considering last 2 days
is every one else getting bad screen break up today ?0 -
He's been there or thereabouts for a few years. Won a breakaway stage in 2004 and has had a few top 10s in Giro mountain stages before.0
-
Wow, Pellizotti. That is a surprise.0
-
contador has pink brake hoods!!
that road is almost laughably steep in the last few k's
I wonder what rear spoket they have on?0 -
Simoni's ridden himself onto the podium!! Wow, if he makes the podium at the end of the Giro, what a way to go out. He's really riding his heart out here.
Ricco and Contador rode extremely well too and Sella - where the heck did this guy come from?
I was surprised DiLuca lost so much. I wonder if all that mess with the doping allegations, etc hurt his training.
While it was neat to see them ride on the dirt, it was also a bit crazy as it became traction-less when it got too steep and a bit dusty.0 -
Bertie's going to take some shifting, now.
No prizes for guessing which team will try to stir things up.
Mr Grumpy in a podium spot, again. Love him or hate him, he's a phenomenon. So consistent.
Sad to see Big Dennis struggle, but these were never his parcours.
At least the fat lady hasn't sung, just yet.
I think the RAI commentator's said Cont changed his bike after a km or so. As they were weighing them at the start, I hope they don't check at the finish! 8)"Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -

Did you see Ricco's back wheel sliding all over the place?
Makes you wonder what would have happened had they not cancelled the road stage in 2006. It was crazy narrow on parts of the course, combined with the steepness, and the thousands of tifosi (is it me or have they been really OTT this year?) Would have been madness.0 -

Still some hard riding to come. But he's got a pretty impressive team to keep things in check. I expect we'll now see them come to the front.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -
Hopefully Simoni will attack early on the Gavia or Mortirolo and force a proper selection. 90 seconds is not beyond his capabilities.
Menchov and Di Luca looked proper stuffed today.0 -
Given the duration and the steepness of the climb, no doubt Dr. Ferrari will be digging out his VAM calculations on his website tomorrow. The top riders were around 1660 m/hour
Using Dr. Lim's formula, a rider like Simoni today was putting out ~ 342W for the climb and would have a power to weight ratio of ~ 5.5W / kg. I think the steepness of parts of the climb combined with the surface are probably why the figures are significantly lower than the ~ 7W/kg you'd expect to see from a top rider.'This week I 'ave been mostly been climbing like Basso - Shirley Basso.'0 -
RAI's post race chin wag had Eddy Merckx trying to coax an answer from Gibo as to where he could find the couple of minutes he needs to win.
Needless to say, Gibo is playing down his chances so much, he resembles a verbal limbo dancer.
Guess what? Ricco paid Bertie a compliment! As he was standing next to him, at the time, I assume he was trying to induce a heart attack!
Back to Simoni, Sella et al: If stage 20, over the Mortirolo and Gavia, finished in Aprica, there'd be no prizes for guess what's to come. It doesn't.
I agree with Iain. Both Levi and latterly Kloeden, have turned off the gas in anticipation of a lot of turquoise train, next week.
I can't believe we are already so close to the conclusion of the season's first GT.

Was thinking the same myself that could have been one thee mountain stages of the last decade if they had went through with it As for Tifosi i dont think there have been as much in the mountains as previous years maybe on the Gavia and Mortirolo it will be different, those that are around are bl**dy annoying sometimes
cheers
MGGasping - but somehow still alive !0 -
How awful did Contador's full pink kit look with his light blue Trek? He even had the pink shades on!
Awful awful awful...
/mod brigade mode off0 -
Just asked this on another thread but it's more relevant here...
Where does Contadors team gets all the pink gear from - the helmet, brake hoods, the sunnies, shoes, whatever other sundry bits & bobs they have. Would all the teams be prepared to kit out one of their bikes in a pink ensemble, or is it just cos Contador was fancied to be up there? I seem to remember him riding on to the Champs-Elysses last year on a bright yellow Trek frame??Rides a Cannondale Synapse 105.0 -

I did and Contador slid too. It was a bad idea.
Also, did you notice that unlike at the TDF, the barriers don't seem to stop the tifosi? I was surprised at how many fans are inside the barriers on the street. Very dangerous!
What does everyone here think of the cyclists claiming that the Giro is too hard?0 -

Good question. I believe Armstrong always had that at the TDF too... though I can't remember for sure if he did for his first win.

HI there.
I heard (prob on Eurosport) that there was a rule on this stage that if the riders could not complete the stage due to a mechanical which couldn't be sorted due to lack of full mechanical support then they would be awarded the same time as the last man on the stage?
Couldn't they have just faked something?
Cheers, Andy0 -
Maybe, but then you don't know what the time limit is going to be until the last rider finishes. Must be a bit of guesswork for the early riders.0
