Plastic Disc behind rear cassette-What does it do?

Just taken delivery of my 07 Felt z80. Very very happy with it too.

One question-the rear cassette is fitted with a clear plastic disc behind the cassette. I've seen them on many other bikes too, but why is it there and can it be safely removed?

I'm being vein here, but I feel it spoils the lines of an otherwise very good looking machine!!

I believe it is to stop the chain overshooting the cassette and ripping your wheel apart.

Hi there.

it's only there to protect your spokes/derailleur if the mechanic hasn't set the thing up right.

You should remove it, but check the limit screws on your rear derailleur first. If you don't know how to do this, take it back to the shop you bought it from. This should be part of any decent after sales service.

Thanks all. I find it strange that such a thing would be fitted to bike at this price point (I know its not an all singing, all dancing full carbon machine) as I would normally associate them with 'cheaper' bikes..

I can well imagine that such a thing would be put on a Paris Roubaix or cyclo cross bike where vanity is pushed aside in favour of not having a mech cage accidently go in to the wheel.

It does bring to mind our old Raleigh Arena with a big battered metal spoke protector ring.
