Looking to get a pair of clipless pedals for my MTB (my first pair of clipless so a bit concerned about falling off in a comedy style!). Just bought a pair of Shimano MT31 shoes so would the obvious choice be a pair of shimano pedals if so which ones? Plus what about cleats?

You can use any MTB clipless pedals, but Shimano have adjustable release tension. You can't beat the M520's for value, great pedals.

This month's MBR magazine has a review of ten pairs of peddles in it. Maybe look at that also?

As Andy_B mentioned, you can't beat these for VFM! They come with cleats, but as it's your first time with SPDs you may want to start with multi-release cleats which make disengaging easier.

I've been using these for the last couple of weeks, and more than happy with them.

i went straight into a pair of Crank Brothers candy sl's which i habve to say to begin with were a little stiff but with in a couple of rides and a few comedy moments they have loosened up a treat! very easy now, but would say that being able to make the tension less to start with would have been a godsend!
always hear good things of the shimano pedals!

So far the Shimano 520's seem to be winning. The MBR review also gives it 10. The 545's have the alloy cage which makes it look more substantial but does it make any difference?

Thanks for the comments so far

I've tried a pair of shimano M545 pedals and crank bro's smarty.

The smarty initially felt easier to unclip, but the build quality is poor, as they broke within an hour. And just a quick inspection of it in my hands could tell it was made to a budget. Also many people say the crank bro pedals have a good feel but always need servicing to keep them working good.

The M545 are pretty good, didn't take too long to learn how to unclip, the build quality looks and feels of a decent standard too. The platform is quite good too, made lining up the shoe to clip it in easier. The platform doesn't work with normal trainers tho as the mechanism sticks up and the shoe doesn't make contact with the platform.

i would recommend the shimanos, should be easier maintenance and longer wearing, hope that helps.

The platform on the 545 is meant to support the foot and reduce "hot-spots". It will, however, clag up with mud more easily. I'd go for the 520s.

The smarty's are the budget option of the crank brothers range and cant take as much abuse. The Candy's are great I have two sets, they are also simple to maintain and are very easy to use.

I have 520s and have no complaints apart from when they get muddy when they can become harder to clip into. I've heard the Crank Bros pedals don't suffer this so much but haven't used them myself
