Super hilly XC ride with mostly hardpack and a little bit of road - 13mph on a good run over 10 miles.

Very technical ride to and around the local woods (80% off road) - big climbs drops and jumps - under 10mph average over 14 miles.

It's not racing but I tend to go for it and am reasonably quick. 18mph average is either stupidly OTT or it's not very technical. Or the rider is superhuman!

Pippen - you seem a little angry/in conflict in your recent posts. Hope nothing's wrong.

So he did nearly 15mph for a 100km impressive indeed (I am not being sarcastic that is impressive) but Nick Craig did the 60km Dyfi in 2.20 which is a reasonable level of XC mountain biking at 16.7mph so I still think that 18mph on certain trails is not out of the question.

40% less distance, an increase of 1.7mph, a professional xc'er! To get to 18mph, you do the math. Anybody averaging 18mph on XC must be going out on some pretty CRAP rides.

William_93, that's what heart rate monitors are for. Search Argos.

Ok now really this whole thread is just ridiculous, yes it would be an easy course. The 18mph is arbritrary anyway.

My point which I have albeit poorly put across is simply that what we consider to be out of reach now may not always be the case, simply because right now it seems like we are 'dreaming' doesnt mean that a significant improvement is not achievable.

If we keep thinking it cant be done then Richard Bannister (sp?) would have never cracked the 4 minute mile. (particularly old example but I hope you understand where I am coming from)

But hey, in my line of work we push boundaries constantly otherwise we would never progress, so maybe my attitude is different to many.

Maybe if you race Pippen you should back yourself a bit more in your training and you may gain the 5% improvement that your mind is holding you back from making.

An 18mph average is good for a lot of road rides, never mind MTB.
