Brake pad wear and tear

How often do you fellow commuters change your brake pads?

I realise there are a lot of factors so here's some info:

- My commute is a 28-mile round trip and I do it five days per week.
- I'm a heavy bloke and I also tend to cover the brakes early, at the first sign of trouble.
- I've got V-brakes (in case anyone was in any doubt and thought I was talking about disc brakes).
- I'm using Aztec blocks and pads at the moment, I think.

I tend to get through a full set of pads every couple of months, is that about right?

probably.....Do you use budget ones? If your commuting you could probably get away with a harder compound as the softer ones are made for wet/muddy mountain biking where you need as much power asa possible

Making sure the brakes are well balanced and looked after will help as well, but probably not much!

do you use cartridge type ones? if you don't you should, buying new regular ones each time is a false economy!
I get a through a set about ever 6 months.

Yes, the blocks stay the same and I just slide new rubber pads into the mounts.

I put some fresh ones on two months ago, just when all that rain came and I basically wore them out in a week. I've still got them on though and they've coped since, but I really should change them now.

Are you abe to just buy replacement pads for them, or do you have to buy holders and pads combined?

I don't rate Aztecs for V brakes - wear very quickly.
Best pads I've used are Ritcheys but they no longer make them.

Handy that our 2 newer bikes have disk brakes - they last SO much longer.

I changed my brake pads (Shimano Ultegra) last week. First change in 6000 miles!! It's fair to say there was very little of each pad left!!!!
    Still breathing.....
