I need to straighten a rear Mavic Aksium - what'e the technique? If I just use a normal spoke key on the nipple then the spoke twists - do I need to hold it straight somehow?

correct you need a spoke holder. or create your own spoke holder that will not damage the spoke.

Would a pair of pliers do it do you reckon?

Pliers will probably damage the spoke. Get a 2-3" piece of wood and saw a thin groove in it. You'll need a mavic spoke key too. Take care with the job - these wheels are tensioned to around 1600N and if the spoke breaks it could do a lot of damage. If it's more than a gnat's tadger out it may be worth sending to the Mavic service centre.

I'll second this advice. If your not sure what you're doing, get some help and / or the right
    tools.
